Teamprojekt Systementwurf: LoRa Network Simulation for Distributed Forest Fire Detection

Wireless Sensor Networks have gained much attraction in various application domains ranging from Smart Farming up to Environmental Monitoring Solutions and disaster detection. A prime application example is the distributed detection of Forest Fires in large areas where sensor nodes are equipped with devices to detect smoke or early smoldering. Key enabler for distributed sensor networks at large areas are highly energy efficient communication technologies to disseminate data between sensor nodes and gateways in a reliable and cost effective way. Recently, LoRa and LoRaWAN has been shown beneficial for data dissemination at high distances with very low power consumption.

In the context of this Team-Project we build a distributed Wireless Sensor Network based on the LoRa networking technology in a simulator. Within this project, participants will design strategies to efficiently disseminate information from sensor nodes to gateways, and further via border-gateways to a centralized server which processes data for forest fire detection. If resources allow, the developed architecture can be validated in terms of real-world prototypes.
