Expected starting date: April 1, 2026 or earlier

Are you finishing or have you recently finished your MSc degree? Curious about research, solving real-world problems, and making a difference with your work? This might be for you! We are looking for a highly motivated PhD student to join our research group at UPB. This is a fully funded, full-time position with excellent opportunities for learning, collaboration, and career development.

What is a PhD?

A PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) is a 3–5 year research program where you work on a specific topic in depth. You will:

  • Learn advanced skills in your field
  • Work closely with a supervisor and a research team
  • Contribute to knowledge through your own research
  • Present your findings at international conferences
  • Grow professionally and prepare for academic or industry careers
  • Contribute to teaching activities

You don’t need to know everything before you start—you will learn in the process and we will guide you. What matters is your curiosity and willingness to learn.

Project Overview

The project will be focused on efficient networked systems for machine learning (particularly large language/vision models). You will explore open questions, design experiments, develop software frameworks, and publish results with research papers. If you are curious about how the networked systems (both the data center and mobile devices) work for modern applications like ChatGPT and would like to contribute to the development of such systems and applications, this position is for you!

Who are we looking for?

We welcome applicants who:

  • Hold (or are about to complete) a Master's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field
  • Are curious, motivated, and enjoy solving hard problems
  • Have good communication skills in English (German is a plus)
  • Are proficient with popular programming languages like C/C++ and Python
  • Have some experience with networked systems in any form

What do we offer?

  • A fully funded PhD position (100% TVL-E13)
  • A supportive and international research environment
  • Freedom to explore your own ideas
  • Opportunities to attend international conferences, summer schools
  • A strong network for future career opportunities
